Why a DCA Forum.

Damage Causing Animal Forum - Mopani.

www.dcaforum.org.za

The control of damage causing animals lead to the formation of the DCA Forum. It is a reality that certain species are not confined to a certain area by fences at all times. Outbreaks happen often and animals can cause serious damage to themselves and the environment.

The DCA Forum consists of private individuals working hand in hand with the government departments to ensure that damages caused by vagrant and rogue animals are limited to the absolute minimum.

It is absolute crucial for every landowner today to optimize the use of land, protect the land and people, and, to limit uncontrolled losses. Damage causing animals can walk distances of up to 60km in a day, breaking fences and eating valuable crop during this journey. Not all damage causing animals necessarily break fences, but may kill domestic livestock on its journey. It may sound simple to say a lion killed three cows, but for the owner of the cows in the rural area it will be the total destruction of the cattle owners income. The loss of income for one single bread winner in the rural area can amount to the loss of basic services to nine other people.

On other occasions it is the long term implication of the damage causing animal's conduct that we must not overlook. Damage caused to a citrus farm in one night amounts to thousands of rands worth of damage. Naturally the citrus trees must also be replanted. Harvesting your own crop becomes a nightmare and very dangerous activity.

It is imperative that we also look at preventative measures to do everything possible to stop the damage causing animal at the boundary of the confined area. This area maybe a reserve, conservancy or game breeders farm. If indeed the area is located close to crop or domestic livestock we encourage our farmers and game breeders to take additional preventative action, ensure that all the fences are on standard, built with high quality material and are maintained regularly. We will agree that the pressure for land is increasing daily, and, competition for food is fierce.

At all times it is our goal to;

1. Trans locate, or,

2. Harvest, or,

3. Destroy, the damage causing animals.
